Choose synthetic-- it's inherent properties result in a "tougher", more durable/ more capable lubricant (and coolant) when compared to traditional mineral based oil. It's why synthetic oils are universally specified in the aviation industry particularly for jet engines. A $2.00 o-ring and about 15 minutes of repair time - and a ½ hour to get your engine really clean again. Let us know what you find upon closer inspection. I did go with progressive fork springs (didn't buy them from here) and they helped quite a bit and I ... Vinish. Virtually any brand of 10w fork oil will be fine. You don't need an expensive type. Cheap Wallyworld 10w fork oil is fine. Be aware that a special tool is needed to disassemble the left fork on an 1800. Also be aware that a special tool or a home-made tool is needed to drive in the fork seals on any VTX.
