Cyclothem

The Greenhorn Cyclothem, also known as the T6-R6 cycle

The middle cyclothem (Doneley) is the first major cyclothem to yield I. obliquus . The uppermost (Inola) yielded abundant Idiognathodus , Neognathodus and Idioprioniodus , and sparse Gondolella , and is characterized by large numbers of Idiognathodus podolskensis . All three contain large numbers of I. amplificus .

The lower portion of the cyclothem is predominantly nonmarine and consists of (in ascending order) a sandstone, shale, "freshwater" limestone, underclay (buried soil), and a coal bed. The upper portion of the cyclothem reflects marine conditions and exhibits alternating shale and limestone beds, both of which usually contain fossils. The cyclothem is composed of four lithofacies common to most cyclic deposits of this age in the western Midcontinent: 1) a lower carbonate unit (transgressive limestone), 2) a lower shale unit, 3) an upper carbonate unit (regressive limestone), and 4) an upper shale unit (after Watney, 1980; fig. 2).The Mowry Shale (part of the Greenhorn Cyclothem) has been commercially mined for bentonite in Montana. The Niobrara "cyclothem" contains hundreds of ash layers (Sonnenfeld et al., 2016). Therefore, at least two Cretaceous Seaway sea level cycles were times of large-scale ash deposition. The term “cyclothem” was coined by Wanless & Weller (1932) to describe repetitive stratigraphic successions of Carboniferous age in Illinois. Nonetheless, comparable rhythmicity had been identified in Carboniferous rocks both in the central and eastern USA, and in Europe during the preceding century.
