I keep the three other spaces for crashed ships I find. I don't scrap till I have 3. I the first I found I fix enough to get it to the station and scrap it. The next damaged ship I found appears in the station, then the third. After the third which ever ship I was last using, mostly the fighter, appears. I only have to repair the first.Dont wait for the scrap menu to complete, enter back in as soon as you pop out, and repeat the same scrap, depending on ship size and class etc, you can multi scrap, 2-15 times with the one ship. I accidentally switched my ship to a broken one. When I tried to reload, my old ship disappeared. It had all of my equipment on it, and now I'm stuck with this pile of rubbish.
