I'm contemplating the idea of buying a Ducati st2 made in 1999. 35k miles, the guy wants around 800$. it needs a new battery and new fairings (I can go without fairings for the time being) new chain tyres and sprocket. I know these bikes can go over 100k miles if well taken care of, but I wanted your opinion on what to check and what ... The Scrambler 800 is a great first bike. Just ride within your limits, e.g. you probably don’t need 5th or 6th gear right away. It’s not as easy and friendly to ride as say a 400-500cc bike, but it is still easy, friendly, more substantial, respectable, and fun. Just going to throw it out there.

The newest Monster or an MT-09 are probably too much bike for a beginner, both are 100+ HP. But take a look at an MT-07 or a Monster 796 / 797 (the one with the 803 cc aircooled engine). Both those bikes have around 70 HP, and "friendly" engine characteristics. But at 445lbs dry, that's a big and heavy motorcycle to throw around. It's going to have some big boots to fill from the 890 ADV and 850GS, and that's before we even consider the more budget-friendly Japanese bikes. Now, having bought a brand new 821, after 2 years - not a scratch on it. If money is no object go for it - modern electronics are a game changer - but you’re likely to drop it, so don’t take loan. The V2 is a very good bike with good electronics. Stability during hard braking is what impressed me the most over my 2006 999S. I ended up going for the V4* my self since engine wise the V2 wasn’t that different than my old bike to justify a swap.
Tested today new Ducati DesertX while waiting for mine to be delivered. 🤩 The bike felt really impressive and very light. Entertaining corners on tar with Pirelli STR is so easy. The bike is about to get 30.000km. It's desmo maintenance time, something about changing engine belts and checking/adjusting valves, etc. Unfortunately I'm not sure I will be able to afford it, my local Ducati dealership told me to expect well over 1000€ for the maintenance with over 12 hours of labour expected 😰😵...If you're going to get any Ducati as a new rider, get the Monster 696. But, consider the fact that you don't weigh a whole lot and, even though the 696 is relatively light at ~355lbs dry, that's 50lbs more than the most common starter bike (Ninja 250r at 300lbs). The 1100 is a great bike, but again, the pricing feels like a kick in the balls. The Street Triple R is a great bike that's fairly priced, and has seen some incremental improvements over the last few years. The base model Panigale is a decent chunk cheaper than the H2. The H2 has much more torque than the panigale but a much heavier bike. Peak HP is similar, abit at different redlines. Both bikes are somewhat service intensive but let's assume that you were capable of servicing the Ducati's desmo valves yourself, significantly lowering the cost. 322K subscribers in the motogp community. I’m 25, had motorcycle license for 6 years now and have Geico at $76 for full coverage with $500 deductibles. Bike is 2010 Streetfighter 1098.
